Biography

Benjamin Beresford is a faculty associate in the School of Historical, Philosophical, and Religious Studies where he focuses on the history of early Soviet culture and politics. He received his doctorate from Arizona State University in 2017 based on his dissertation, "Rhapsody in Red: Jazz and a Soviet Public Sphere Under Stalin," which analyzes the ways that Soviet citizens articulated their desires and perspectives on Soviet society through their engagement with jazz music during the 1930s and 1940s. Before coming to ASU, Beresford received a master's degree in social science from the University of Chicago and a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Victoria in British Columbia. His research has been funded by the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX), the ASU Center for Jewish Studies, and the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies at ASU.

Beresford previously served as the graduate assistant to the ASU Melikian Center: Russian, Eurasian & East European Studies, where he helped manage multiple sponsored projects and the Critical Languages Institute.
