Biography

Benjamin is a Faculty Associate in the School of Historical, Philosophical, and Religious Studies where he focuses on the history of early Soviet culture and politics. Benjamin received his Ph.D. from ASU in 2017 based on his dissertation, "Rhapsody in Red: Jazz and a Soviet Public Sphere Under Stalin," which analyzes the ways that Soviet citizens articulated their desires and perspectives on Soviet society through their engagement with jazz music during the 1930s and 1940s. Before coming to ASU, Benjamin received a M.A. in Social Science from the University of Chicago and a B.A. in History from the University of Victoria in British Columbia. Benjamin's research has been funded by the International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX), the ASU Center for Jewish Studies, and SHPRS.
